Computer Great, Customer Service Abysmal
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The netbook is fantastic–the screen is bright and as clear and crisp as I have ever seen. I’ve had glitches where Windows 7 Explorer crashes…and then works again and keeps working. Could be some conflict I haven’t worked out yet, and an OS problem, not a computer problem, I believe. I have never liked touchpads and use a mouse with this; you can disable the touchpad when a USB mouse is connected. The computer itself is great.
Customer service is another thing entirely. I spent an hour with someone with an accent so heavy I had trouble understanding her yesterday–I had a simple question. How do I hook this up to my HD TV so that I can watch episodes of shows that I miss via the network websites? She had no idea what I meant, but I said the word “cable” enough times for her to understand….somewhat (plug it into HDMI port or RGB (pc) port, two different cables). She asked what brand the TV was and whether it was LCD. She then said I had to have a cable that she could sell me. Long story short–they sent a useless cable, she was wrong that I had to use one that was proprietary to Dell, she was wrong about the connection. A simple HDMI cable from Best Buy is all you need. We just spent two hours with another guy (in India, heavy accent), who wanted to screen share in order to do this. When we refused, he suggested pushing the F1 key, which did the trick. Not sure how he planned to accomplish that via a screen share. The last 30 minutes of that call was my attempt to return the useless cable, which has still not been resolved; they will send an email and when I respond to it, they will call me to further discuss this (why?).
Getting help from Dell is an exercise in total frustration and failure to communicate well. If you are an English-speaking American and you often need a lot of help with computers, you might be better off finding one with more English-friendly customer service. If this is not a concern, then I highly recommend this netbook! Lightweight, nice big keys on a finger-friendly keyboard, brilliant display.
Great small laptop!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For a while, I was looking at many different netbooks – I wanted a new, small computer but was disappointed with their lacking features (e.g. minimal 1GB processing power, Windows 7 Starter limitations [you can't even change your desktop background on Windows 7 Starter! Google it! Who woulda thought], etc.).
This was a great choice – just 1 inch bigger, it beats netbooks in many different ways. The HD screen is beautiful and the computer itself has a great look to it. 4GB RAM, 250 GB storage. After about a week, I’m enjoying all of the features. People mention the battery sticking out and the fingerprints as drawbacks -> they’re really not… I hardly notice these things at all. The thing that was a bit frustrating at first was the mouse pad… no click buttons took some getting used to. But even that is fine with me now (the 1st couple days I had buyer’s remorse but not anymore… It’s like getting used to the gestures on a new phone). So for ~ $150 more than a typical netbook, you get the laptop you really wanted!
If you’re looking for a good case for this laptop, check this Case Logic one out:
DVS9 DVD Player Shuttle for 7-9-inch DVD Players
It fits my laptop perfectly (including the battery that sticks out a bit -> since the case is 2 in. thick). And the front pocket pits the adapter fine (a bit of a tight squeeze but it fits).
My experience so far
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Hello,
I’ve had my product over a month now.
THE GOOD:
The OS is 64bit Windows 7. Can’t complain about that. I am happy with the size of the laptop and screen resolution. I find this has respectable battery life. The weight is quite comfortable for me. I have gone for at 2 hours with moderate and peaked down at my battery display at the halfway mark or a little less. I would risk going to a coffee shop without my charger on this laptop. This laptop does not burn my lap. I don’t know if it is because the battery keeps it from laying flat. This a complaint for some people but I find that I like this. This unit has an HDMI which I am ecstatic about. It means I can connect it to HD TVs on my travels. So far I have tested it with 720p content to my satisfaction. I’ve read reviews where it is said to work well at 1080p with some tweaking.
MAJOR REASON TO CONSIDER NOT BUYING:
If you intend to use the built in touch bad a lot you may be in for major annoyance. On almost any review you read about this laptop they will complain about this touchpad. I agree with them. it is what stops this laptop from being FANTASTIC. I am a person who has never pulled out a mouse to use a laptop. This laptop has had me do that several times. It is also really easy to re-size the screen size without meaning too. I realize Dell meant this as a feature but I find this all counter intuitive. The left and right mouse button areas are also too small. I find myself using my left hand to hold down the left mouse button while using the right hand to scroll when highlighting. They’ve provided software updates to this, but I have noticed no performance improvement. They need to redesign this.
MINOR (RELATIVELY) ANNOYANCES:
No DVD Burner internally or externally. Its absence makes the drive lighter. Depending on your needs you may opt to buy a small external that you keep in your laptop case or buy a laptop with one built in. I think the primary annoyance for me is if I need to rebuild my machine from using a DVD. Be sure to create the emergency recover disc as soon as possible.
This is not a gaming laptop. It cannot handle graphically intense games. But I imagine the people who buy this laptop are not looking for that. If your game requirements are light you’ll be happy. Besides, the touchpad is just awful for playing any game that requires mouselike interaction.
There is no drive activity light. Not a showstopper by ANY means.
To wrap it up.
Be prepared for the touch-pad. It is JUST as annoying as people say. It is the ONLY reason I don’t give it four stars.
Plan for the lack of a DVD/CD burner just as you would any netbook. It does not have to be showstopper. Just be prepared. Have a recover plan and be good about backing up important data via, Network, USB or External burner.
Very nice PC – great size and weight + normal keyboard
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my first personal laptop purchase in several years and have been putting it off, but when the price was so attractive for this nicely featured laptop (250 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, 6 cell battery + Windows 7) couldn’t wait any longer. It’s performed very well for me. I love the weight factor, long battery life, normal keyboard and am getting used to and liking the multi-touch mouse pad. Overall, it’s a great PC…only drawbacks are the fingerprint mark issue mentioned in other reviews and the fan noise is a little annoying. I’m getting adjusted to Windows 7 OS and trying to find where MS moved stuff from Windows XP. I would buy this again and recommend it to friends.
Excellent choice for netbook size PC
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent product from Dell. Windows 7 Premium, 4 GB RAM, and a battery that lasts 6 hrs..
The only issue is the battery does stick out the back as noted in other reviews, but it does makes a good handle
I was concerned I would have trouble reading the fine print (I had a small Dell at the office and it gave me headaches with the fine print). The 11z is very easy to read and of course with the browser Ctrl +/- allows you to enlarge/shrink the screen content.
no Microsoft software
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was surprised that the Dell Inspiron Laptop came with no Microsoft software, just Windows 7. I bought the computer to run a PC based application for gardening, but need a photo application to open the photo part of the application. So, now I have to buy a Microsoft package….
99% Perfection
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I needed a small notebook/netbook to walk around with at school. I am very picky with any electronic device, and expect quality when I make a purchase. I did A LOT of research beforehand to decide which brand would be the best. This one has more than exceeded my expectations in all areas.
PROS:
- Hi def led screen is miles ahead of the regular 1280 x 600 resolution screens
- Excellent performance in everything I need, including using MS Office, Adobe CS4, programming, and watching HD videos in full 1080p!
- Large multi-gesture mouse pad similar to Apple notebook
- Lots of ports, including memory card slot (3 in 1), HDMI port (full 1080p), USB ports including one powered for use while computer is asleep
- Great battery life (I must have a special unreleased prototype version, because my battery lasts over 8 hours without using power saver mode! They advertise 6 hours I believe)
- Great speaker volume (lacking bass but so what!)
- Thin charger, great for packing it in the same case
- Doesn’t heat up much at all, even when using for extended periods of time
- Very attractive looking, ultra thin. Nice glossy surface. Easily leaves fingerprints, but everything does these days.
CONS
- Battery lasts long, but is pretty much the same thickness as the notebook itself. Makes it a little harder for use with sleeves, but it creates great vent airflow and a good typing angle. Buy the 3-cell version if you have a problem.
- Left and right mouse buttons are very difficult to click, but I’ve gotten used to using the gestures to compensate
I couldn’t be happier overall considering the under $500 price tag. Dell did a brilliant job with this one, and Amazon did just as well lowering the price even further, and getting it to me with its usual quality packaging. 5 stars for me.
awesome

I love this laptop. When I priced it at dell they were 650 + tax + shipping. The touch pad takes a little getting used to, but you learn it pretty fast. I would definitely recommend this to friends.
Smacks Netbooks Sideways
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had been looking into getting a 10″ netbook from HP and was told by our distributor to wait until after CES because HP was releasing new specs on all of their netbooks. Well needless to say I was unimpressed. I decided to step up to an 11″ and let me tell you it was the best decision ever. This notebook has all the preformance of a full sized notebook and the portability of a netbook. With 4Gb of RAM it runs all of my applications as well as could be expected. Amazon’s website had listed this as having an B/G/N wireless radio but have fixed it to show only B/G which is what it indeed has. If you look at the specs for this notebook on Dell you would be led to believe that it has an internal bluetooth radio. This is not true however and I had to get one off of Ebay and install it. Don’t bother calling Dell for this part if you want/need it. They were unsuccessful in finding the correct part number for the correct bluetooth radio. I will say that the documentation on their site for this model is exceptional and using it I was able to install the module in about 30 minutes. The battery typically lasts between 4 and 4 1/2 hours on a charge which isn’t too bad. Another nice thing is that the Function Keys are reversed so if you want to adjust the screen brightness or access the media control buttons you do not have to press the “Fn” key in addition to the task key.
Overall I am completely happy with this notebook and would recommend it to anyone who wants an netbook size computer without making all of the performance sacrifices that come with the 10″ models.
Pros:
4Gb RAM
Size
Screen Quality
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Cons:
No internal bluetooth
Glossy fingerprint magnet cover
Dell’s knowledge of thier own product
Dell 11″ netbook is great!

Bought as an XMas present for my 19 year old daughter in college, to replace her 3-year old Toshiba satellite (her main PC is a large Dell with more memory and speed than anything I use…) The new Dell laptop ( more like a netbook) received all file transfers from her old Toshiba, which was promptly put in storage under her bed at home and never used again. She reports zero problems with the new Dell netbook and likes its smaller size. Her beta test of Windows 7 Premium (she is an XP and Vistas user) was no problems at all. Recommend this unit for price and capabilities.
